"Dine Out for Families"

Family and School Service takes the counseling work of Family & Children First into the classroom with the Family and Schools Together (FAST) program.

FAST is an after-school program that helps children succeed at school, at home and in the community by involving parents in their education. It is designed for children who are at risk of school failure. The program shows parents how to work with their children in ways that build self-esteem and organization skills, and that enhance creative thinking and problem solving.

FAST involves the following:

  • Structured play and activity time for parents and children;
  • Sharing of a family meal;
  • Games that strengthen communication skills;
  • Parent discussion groups;
  • Quality family time.

It meets once a week for eight weeks at selected area elementary and middle schools.

When families complete the eight-week program, they are encouraged to participate in monthly outings in the community. Such outings foster continued support from other families, encourage family interaction and allow the families to enjoy community activities without the usual financial burden.

Last year, 88 families participated in FAST, with 60 families residing in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and 28 in New Albany, Indiana. The list of participating schools varies from year to year. If you would like this service for your school, please ask the school counselor to contact our program supervisor at (502) 893-3900 ext. 272.
