Mark, a new sixth grader, and his three-generation family joined our after-school program at a teacher’s recommendation. His grades had plummeted. He either forgot his homework or did it sloppily. He hated school. Stuck in a rut, Mark and his family participated in a group once a week for eight weeks. Through activities, shared meals and parent discussions, his father and grandmother learned what made Mark tick and how to help him succeed in school.
